Authors, whatever you do, when using word, DO NOT USE AUTO-HYPHENATE!
Auto-hyphenate will hyphenate words so that words continue between lines so a steady character per line count is maintained. Sounds fine as print books often do this, right? No because when converting to ebook formats, the formatting completely changes so that there are different number of words per line, so you end up with wor-ds th-at rea-d l-ike th-is. Even worse, once it auto-hyphenates, it doesn’t un-hyphenate, so changing any formatting, even in the word document itself, will leave the hyphens behind. I stupidly made this mistake with A Clear and Feathered Danger(but not the others). I’m still paying for this, probably in real dollar terms as readers stop reading it and the sequels assuming those are in it too(they are not).
I’ve hopefully gotten 99.9% out, but there might be one or two behind. So I’m posting a warning, don’t use auto-hyphenate, it will only lead to terrible things.
I found somebody used the term “punctuation K23” to find my site. I can only guess that because in A Clear and Feathered Danger they’ll find “Tower K-23.” I’m well aware of that and did it on purpose. K-23 refers to Tower K-23, where my protagonists have their office. K23 refers to the detective agency itself and the series title. In universe, this makes sense, because there are other private detectives in Tower K-23 and naming your agency “The K-23 Detective Agency” pretends they don’t exist. So Alfonso removed the hyphen.
Why K23 as series name in general, it rolls of the tongue and if this ever becomes a TV show(in my dreams anyway), “previously on K23…” sounds cool to me in general.
The problem when writing a series is burnout, you tire of the characters, setting and plot. I had always planned upon the 3rd being released to slow down and take a few months to release a few side stories and write a non-K23 work and then go back and write the next three. This would allow me to recharge creatively and time to really start promoting as K23 will have three titles.
While waiting for the my illustrator to finish the cover and release the book, I started into the 4th book and found it extremely difficult to write because I’ve been “living” in Terrall for 3 works already. I haven’t burned out, not at all, it’s just time to take some time away from Alfonso, Quintanelle and the gang.
Therefore, I’m going to write my romance, Heiress’s Baby Daddy, and release a few k23 short stories either here on the blog or elsewhere. Once that’s done then I’ll finish the 4th K23 Detectives book. I know what the plot is and I have a stellar start, but I think taking time off will let me come up with the best story possible. Plus by writing a “standard romance” I can then go and add a believable romance subplot for Quintanelle(she a girly romantic at heart).
So stay tuned, I’m not going anywhere.
The third book, The Impending Darkness, which has heavy steampunk elements, will be released in August.
